Lorne E. Render, Director

Lorne RenderLorne E. Render, Director, has been at the Beach Museum of Art since 1999. He has a BA and a MA in art history from the University of Oregon and a certificate from the Getty Leadership Institute.

Lorne was curator of art and director of exhibitions at the Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta and then head, exhibit design services at the Royal Ontario Museum, Toronto, Ontario. Returning to the United States, he was director of the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana prior to coming to K-State.

He is involved in various professional organizations including the Mountain-Plains Museums Association, the Association of College and University Museums and Galleries, and the Manhattan Area Arts and Humanities Coalition. He is also a peer reviewer for the American Association of Museums’ Accreditation Program and Museum Assessment Program.


Bill North, Senior Curator

Bill NorthBill North, Senior Curator, received degrees in the history of art from the University of Kansas (BGS, MA). Before coming to K-State in 1995, Bill worked at the Kresge Art Museum, Michigan State University.

During his tenure at the Beach Museum of Art, Bill has substantially expanded the art collection and has organized over fifty exhibitions. He has written extensively on the art and artists of Kansas and the region, producing numerous exhibitions catalogues and related publications for the museum, including Alan Shields: A Survey (1999), The Prints of John F. Helm, Jr.: A Catalogue Raisonné (2001), and …to build up a rich collection… Selected Works from the Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art (2003).

Bill is a member of the Print Council of America, on the Friends of Cedar Crest (Kansas Governor’s residence), and a member of the Kansas Advisory Committee for Career and Technical Education of the Kansas State Department of Education.


Elizabeth Seaton, Associate Curator

Liz SeatonElizabeth Seaton, Associate Curator, received a BA in fine art from Harvard University and a PhD in American art from Northwestern University. Before arriving at K-State, Seaton worked in the museum education department of the Art Institute of Chicago and as assistant curator at the Northwestern University’s Block Museum of Art.

She is a member of the Print Council of America and is the group’s membership coordinator. Liz has written numerous articles and two major publications, Paths to the Press: Printmaking and American Women Artists, 1910 – 1960 (2006) and Federal Art Project WPA Printmaking in California (2005).


Sarah Price, Registrar/Collections Manager

Sarah PriceSarah Price, Registrar/Collections Manager, joined the museum in 2008. She is from Abilene, Kansas and received a BA in art history and history from Emporia State University and an MS in Museum and Field Studies, Collections Management from the University of Colorado.

Following graduation, Sarah worked as a collections assistant at the Boulder History Museum then as a registrar assistant at the Denver Art Museum. Before joining the museum staff, she was the curator of collections at the Rogers Historical Museum in Rogers, Arkansas. She is a member of the Registrars Committee of the American Association of Museums and previously served as a member of the Southeastern Registrars Association.


Lindsay Smith, Exhibitions Designer

Lindsay SmithLindsay Smith, Exhibitions Designer, started at K-State in 1996. He earned a BFA from K-State and received an MA from the University of New Mexico. Prior to coming to the museum, he worked as a preparator at the Gerald Peters Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Lindsay has a discriminating eye which he uses extremely effectively to enhance all the exhibitions installed in the museum. Lindsay is an accomplished artist who exhibits widely and is represented in both public and private collections.


Kathrine Schlageck, Senior Educator

Kathrine SchlageckKathrine Schlageck, Senior Educator, is the longest serving museum staff member joining K-State in 1995. She came from the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, New London, Connecticut, where she was Director of Education. Kathrine has a BA from Stanford University and an MA from the College of William and Mary.

She is a strong advocate of innovative educational programming for schools, university students, and adults. She participates extensively in professional groups and has received many awards for her work. She was recognized with a 2009 Governor’s Arts Award in the category of Arts in Education.


Martha Scott, Business and Marketing Manager

Martha ScottMartha Scott, Business and Marketing Manager, started work at K-State in 1994 at the Center for Science Education and has been at the museum since 1998. Prior to coming to K-State she worked at the City of Manhattan. Martha received a BS from K-State.

She is the person who knows all of the intricacies of the various policies, procedures, and systems in the university and is an indispensable resource to all the staff. In addition, she manages press releases and other publicity and markets all of the exhibitions, programs, and events.


Ladonna Piper, Membership and Events Coordinator

Ladonna PiperLadonna Piper, Membership and Events Coordinator, came to the museum from the President’s Club at the KSU Foundation. Ladonna has an extensive history with K-State and the Foundation where she has developed and managed numerous successful programs.

At the museum she coordinates all the Friends of the Beach Museum of Art activities as well as other museum events and schedules the rental use of the building.
