Map Making Vocabulary

Cartographer – mapmaker
Compass rose – a key used to show directions on a map
Distance – amount of space between points
Equator – an imaginary horizontal line, between the north and south pole around the middle of the earth
Grid – a series of intersecting lines used to locate places
Key/legend – a list of explanations for symbols
Latitude – an imaginary set of lines which tell location between the north or south pole and the equator (horizontal)
Longitude – an imaginary set of line which tell location of points east and west of the prime meridan
Prime meridian – an imaginary vertical line around the center of the earth, located in Greenwich, England
Scale – a unit of measurement that stands for another unit of measurement – example 1”=1 mile
Survey – to find out measurement boundaries, or elevations by measuring angles and distances
