Summer 2014 ARTSmart Programs for Children and Families

Igniting the Senses

In conjunction with the Manhattan Public Library summer reading theme "Fizz - Boom - Read" these classes explore the science of sensory perception and the experience of one sense igniting another. Young Artists Programs

The Young Artists Programs take place in June and July with tours, activities, and art workshops. Space is limited and reservations are required. Contact 785-732-7718 or

Young Artists & Observers: $15

June 9, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (ages 9-12)
June 16, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (ages 6-12)
June 23, 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. (ages 6-8)
June 30, 1-3:30 p.m. (ages 6-12)   

Young Artists will choose from art materials such as acrylic, cray pas, pastel, prisma colors and linoleum block prints. One work by each artist will be chosen for display. 

  • spend time sketching from nature in The Meadow, a learning landscape of native plants adjacent to the Beach Museum of Art.
  • receive a behind-the-scenes tour
  • create art based on Meadow sketches

Young Musicians: $25

July 7-10, 9:30-11:30 a.m. (ages 9-12) or 1-3 p.m. (ages 6-9)

Students will create a sound art performance inspired by art from the permanent collection.  

  • receive a behind-the-scenes tour
  • participate in music, performance, and language arts exercises and games
  • create an artwork to be included in the slide show
Family Events & Workshops

Young Artists Celebration and Reception: Free

July 11, 3-5 p.m.

View works created in the Young Artists programs and enjoy performances and readings by the Young Musicians and the Kansas State University Department of English Young Writers' Workshop participants. Refreshments will be served.
